Red, White & Black

Red, White and Black is a photo, news collage and audio project centered on how geographic location, bias and socio-economic status impact the life and
growth of an individual.

Red, White & Black blends first person accounts thought interviews, news articles and local documentation to reveal the invisible lines that divide and link us as a society.

In Red, White & Black, participants from each county in the state of New Jersey will be interviewed, photographed and have their portraits digitally collaged with newspaper clippings from their respective hometowns.

These edited images will be printed on large canvases and wired with speakers set to continuously play audio from each participant’s interview.

This series is designed to be exhibited in a large room so participants responses echo and chatter over another, forcing viewers to move closer to each piece to hear the participants inner thoughts while inspecting the headlines covering their skin, giving a literal list of opinions about what society “says” about them and where they come from.

 The Interview

Each participant will be asked the same set of questions during interviews to ensure continuity. Interviews consist of 13 open ended questions, see the samples below.

  • Do you like the place you came from?

  • How do you think others perceive you?

  • Have you ever felt hesitant to tell others where you are from?

  • If you could change one thing about where you’re from what would it be?

“I believe that issues can only be solved when all parties meet with an openness to understanding the other sides position and reasoning. I think expository, first person accounts of an individual’s reality is the best start for productive conversations about some of our countries most debated issues.”

Important information on participating

This project values the time and information provided by those who volunteer to take part. Images of participants are only used as a guide for collaging the text and the final artwork will not feature any actual photos of the participants. Interviews however will feature the unaltered voices of participants. This should be taken into consideration before participating in this project.

The photoshoot process is simple and will only require 30 minutes at most including any set up. Participants are not required to wear any specific clothing, provide props, etc. It’s preferable that participants look as they would running errands or in their regular style of clothes.

Interviews can take 10-35 minutes depending on the length of answers provided and are conducted on the same day as photoshoots.

If you are a New Jersey resident interested in being interviewed and photographed for this project please fill out the form below.
