This project seeks photo uploads of florist message cards. From love notes to apologies and condolences. All languages are applicable.

What is Data Art?

Data art is the process of collecting information from a broad population to directly inform the artistic practice. It combines elements of research, social science and data analysis to produce first person led documentary artwork.

 

Privacy Protection & Data Uses

All surveys and questionnaires are completely anonymous unless participants volunteer contact information for follow up.

In order to protect the privacy of participants, no individual’s name, email address, or any other information pertaining to the individual will be published or kept on record. Individuals interested in participating are encouraged to use a nickname or pseudonym when reaching out about any projects they have interest in to feel more secure.

Surveys:

Surveys are completely anonymous and only the answers provided are saved. Online survey’s are hosted via Alphabet’s Google Form application and require no name, location or email in order to fill out. The data that is collected through surveying will be published in an online database for viewers and publications. No other information is collected via online or in person surveying. If a participant provided specific information regarding a work place, name, or other identifying mark it will be redacted from the content.

Content Uploads:

Content uploads are published anonymously. Any names, addresses or other identifying information that is not removed prior to upload will be blocked out in post editing before the files are saved to digital storage for project use.

Interviews:

Interviews for any project are conducted over a secure platform and will not be recorded unless verbal and or written consent is provided ahead of time by the interviewee. Interviews are designed to provide a more in-depth understanding of what a participant does and are a good way for participant and the projects producer learn more about one another. Only information that is stated to be “on the record” will be taken down. No names or any specific information will be recorded or necessary.

Data Use

Information collected for any data collection project or endeavor will be used for the sole purpose of that specific project. Collected information will not be given, sold, or exchanged to any other entity, or utilized for any purpose other than that which was expressed in the original project description. Information collected will be used differently based on the specific project.

Ethical data usage is critical to this practice and its importance is vital to the health and legitimacy of these projects. For questions or more information on any of these points or collection projects please reach out via the contact page.

 

As a data artist I collect first person information from the public and use it to create installation and photographic works that help a broad audience visualize and interpret complex social and economics concepts.
